Jenny left Max and took the elevator to the third floor. Johnnie was just heading out the door as she entered. She handed him his coffee.

‘Sorry it took a while. Heard from Rickard again?’

‘Not since this morning.’

‘So you don’t know what he’s sick with?’

Johnnie shrugged as if to say it doesn’t matter and turned to leave.

‘Are you still working on the Judge’s case?’

‘Yep. Just running down a lead now.’

‘Really. Anything I can help with?’

‘No. I’m good. I’ll let you know if it goes anywhere.’

‘Really?’ Jenny didn’t hide her scepticism as she watched Johnnie leave. Taking a sip of her coffee, she pulled out her chair and wriggled her mouse to wake up her computer. She typed her password in and tapped the keys to search the police database for anything on Narelle. Pulling up prior addresses, police records, prior arrests and anything else she thought might be background for the interview. Finally satisfied she had what she needed, she added some notes to her phone before putting it in her jacket pocket.

Opening her drawer, she retrieved her bag and gun. Placing the gun in her holster, she put her jacket on, drank the rest of her coffee and swung her bag over her shoulder. As she left she considered waiting for the elevator but decided to take the stairs.

She collected keys to an unmarked car and walked across the carpark, pressing the unlock button as she approached the line of black Commodores. The indicators on the second from the end flashed. She opened the door and was about to slip into to the driver’s seat when someone stepped out from behind the large round pillar near the car.

Anderson walked up and loomed over her, his aftershave wafting in the air.

‘Meet me at the gym after your shift. Four okay?’ She looked at his eyes, they weren’t looking at her, but watching her surroundings, scanning left to right, searching.

‘What’s going on?’ Jenny felt like pushing him out of her personal space, but he was almost shielding her from anyone seeing. The young detective couldn’t work out if it was a protective or aggressive stance.

‘I’ll tell you when we meet. Four.’ He moved past her and disappeared back into the unlit part of the carpark. Jenny stood still, frowning into the gloom, the car door still open, the keys in her hand.

‘Four it is then.’ She spoke to the empty space as she got in her car and started the engine. She rubbed her hands together, trying to get some warmth into them as she turned the heater dial to maximum. Placing her phone in the stand on the dash, she pressed the pairing button and connected her phone to the hands free.

She dialled Jack’s number as she drove out of the carpark, idly wondering what to make of Anderson as the call began to ring.

‘Jenny.’ Jack answered, his usual “Detective Cunningham” greeting absent. She felt sick at the idea of him losing his badge.

‘Yes Boss. I’m just on my way to question Narelle again, officially, for the record, but Anderson just bailed me up for a meeting.
